Understand the calculation

Engagements = likes or reactions + comments + shares + saves. Rate = engagements ÷ your selected audience measure × 100. For example, 50 engagements and 1,000 followers gives 5.00%.

By followers

Compares one post with your follower base. Not every follower sees the post, and non-followers can engage.

By reach

Compares actions with unique accounts reached. It is not the percentage of unique people who engaged.

By impressions

Compares actions with displays. One person can generate multiple impressions; video views are a different metric.

Methodology reference: Hootsuite’s engagement rate formulas. Platforms and analytics tools may include different interaction types, so their results can differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate?

There is no universal score. Compare posts with the same formula, interaction types, reporting period and content format. This calculator does not grade results or predict reach, sales or platform rankings.

Can I use it for Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn?

Yes, when you have the relevant post metrics. Include only available interaction types, without counting the same action twice. Use native analytics for reach and impressions.

Can I calculate several posts together?

This tool calculates one post at a time. For a simple average, calculate each post using the same method, then add the rates and divide by the number of posts. Dividing total actions by combined reach produces a different, weighted result.

Does a high result prove authentic engagement?

No. A numerical ratio cannot verify authenticity or commercial value. Separate paid and organic performance where possible, and evaluate meaningful comments, audience relevance and conversions.
